The German Federal Education and Training Assistance Act (BAföG) is aimed at enabling young people to study at university regardless of their family's financial situation.
One half of the funds provided by BAföG takes the form of an allowance and the other half is an interest-free loan. These payments must then be paid back after your period of study up to a maximum of €10,000. Repayment must begin within five years after the grant was given and be completed a 20-year period.
The best and fastest repaying students are rewarded by a waivering of the loan by 15-25%!
Eligibility to claim funding through BAföG depends on a student's age, nationality and individual qualifications.
