  • The rapid increase in capability and availability of powerful and easy to use smart
phones and internet appliances (such as the HP Smart phones and Handhelds,
iPhone, Android G1, Nokia N95/96 and many others) which are (almost) always
connected by fast 3G networks to the information cloud will fuel a change in
users' access and use of collective information. These mobile devices will give
users a convenient method to instantly access (web) information and interact with
web services no matter where the user is and what the user is doing. The
capability and availability of mobile devices create new platform for natural
language applications such as speech recognition, machine translation,
    information retrieval.
In this talk, I will describe the challenge and opportunities of mobile language
technologies, including the hand-held speech translator, mobile sign translation
system and the on-going research of developing context-aware in the simulated
    virtual worlds.

The lecture will be held within the interACT Distinguished Lecture Series
between Universität Karlsruhe (TH), Carnegie Mellon University, USA, Hong
Kong University of Science and Technology and Waseda University, Japan.
