Travelling to Karlsruhe

Arriving by train

After arriving please leave through the main exit. All trams heading towards the city centre or university depart on the right.
If you would like to go to the university, then take line 2 in the direction of Wolfartsweier, 3 direction of Heide or S4 direction of  Bretten/Gölshausen (or Heilbronn).
Get off the tram at Kronenplatz, Universität or Durlacher Tor. More information about local transport can be found under KVV. The Deutsche Bahn timetable offers you detailed information about arriving by train.

Arriving by car to the Southern campus

The Southern campus of the KIT is situated in the city centre of Karlsruhe and is easy to reach via several motorways.

  • Coming from North: Frankfurt and Heidelberg (A5)
    Leave the motorway A5 (direction Karlsruhe/Basel) at the Karlsruhe–Durlach exit.
    Continue driving towards Karlsruhe (first exit).
    Follow the four-lane road (Durlacher Allee) until you reach the sign that says "Universität" and then turn to the right (Adenauer Ring).
    After a short distance you reach the main entrance on the left.
  • Coming from Northwest: Köln and Koblenz (A61)
    Follow the motorway A61 until you reach the A5 (direction Karlsruhe/Basel).
    Leave the motorway A5 at the Karlsruhe–Durlach exit.
    Continue driving towards Karlsruhe (first exit).
    Follow the four-lane road  (Durlacher Allee) until you reach the sign that says "Universität" and then turn to the right (Adenauer Ring).
    After a short distance you reach the main entrance on the left.
  • Coming from East: Munich and Stuttgart (A8)
    Follow the motorway A8 towards Karlsruhe until you reach the Karlsruhe junction (“Karlsruher Dreieck”).
    Proceed from there towards the A5 to Frankfurt.
    Leave the A5 at the Karlsruhe–Durlach exit.
    Continue driving towards Karlsruhe (first exit).
    Follow the four-lane road (Durlacher Allee) until you reach the sign that says "Universität" and then turn to the right (Adenauer Ring).
    After a short distance you reach the main entrance on the left.
  • Coming from South: Basel and Freiburg (A5)
    Leave the motorway A5 towards Frankfurt at the Karlsruhe–Durlach exit.
    Continue driving towards Karlsruhe (first exit).
    Follow the four-lane road (Durlacher Allee) until you reach the sign that says "Universität," and then turn to the right (Adenauer Ring).
    After a short distance you reach the main entrance on the left.

If you are arriving by car and want to drive onto the campus, please use the entry from the east (main entry, see map) and ask for an entry permit at the gate.

Arriving by plane

  • Stuttgart Airport:

  • Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport (Baden-Airpark):
    Below you will find some information about Badenairpark. When you arrive take the bus 205 in the direction of Merkurwald, to the Baden-Baden train station
    (duration: 30 min). From Baden-Baden take the train to Karlsruhe train station (duration: 20 min).
    Look above at the »train « information how to reach the University of Karlsruhe. If you are looking for a connection, you can use the Deutsche Bahn timetable. By car you drive as described above from the South/Southwest.

Tram, taxi and car hire in Karlsruhe

Karlsruhe transportation:

Karlsruhe has a very good public transport system. You can however also take a taxi.
If you live in the centre we recommend using the tram. The tram runs every 2 to 10 minutes during normal office hours.
The local and regional transport in Karlsruhe is organised by Karlsruher Verkehrsverbund (KVV) Therefore you can use the same ticket on trams and buses. Please contact KVV for more information.
