Unveiling the Road Ahead - Quests and Quirks in Pursuit of Unanswered Security (Research) Questions

As road users, our foremost desire is to ensure that each journey on the road is characterized by trust, reliability, and safety within an ever-evolving interconnected automotive environment. In this presentation, we embark on an exploration of the domain of automotive cybersecurity. Our journey delves into the nuanced intricacies of threat analyses and risk assessments, particularly focusing on software-only products reliant on external hardware mechanisms. Additionally, we shed light on the inherent complexities of securing vehicles as distributed systems, unraveling the intricate challenges posed by a vast number of interconnected components. Furthermore, we examine the realm of in-car intrusion detection systems, spotlighting the scarcity of empirical data, particularly in comparison to backend systems. As we navigate through these pivotal discussions, we challenge conventional wisdom with a bold hypothesis: that cybersecurity standardization may paradoxically diminish security levels in some parts of the automotive industry today and maybe in all industries producing any kind of digital products in the future.
