The KIT Department of Informatics is reorganizing itself: Prof. Michael Beigl was elected to the faculty board as Dean and Prof. Jan Niehues and Prof. Kathrin Gerling as Vice Deans. Michael Beigl succeeds Prof. Bernhard Beckert, who will act as Head of Division in future, while Jan Niehues and Kathrin Gerling take over the positions of Vice Deans from Ina Schaefer and Michael Beigl. With his election, a familiar face returns to the top of the faculty: Michael Beigl already held the position of Dean from 2012 to 2015. His renewed assumption of office combines experience and continuity with the ambition to provide new impetus for research, teaching and academic self-administration. Prof. Gerhard Neumann will remain with the Department as Dean of Studies.

Prof. Michael Beigl is Professor of Pervasive Computing Systems at KIT. His research interests include ubiquitous computing, wearable computing and embedded and networked systems.

Prof. Jan Niehues represents the field of speech and multimodal AI. His scientific work focuses on machine translation, speech recognition and the processing of multimodal data.

Prof. Kathrin Gerling is Professor of Human-Centered Computing. Her research lies at the interface of computer science and society, with a focus on human-centered AI, accessibility, interaction design and digital games.

The newly elected Department Board is taking up its work with the aim of continuing the successful development of the Department of Informatics and actively shaping the diverse challenges of the coming years.
