Generative AI

This guide is aimed at both students and teachers of the KIT Faculty of Informatics, with the exception of interdisciplinary theses and the courses of the Institute for Information and Business Law (IIWR). The guide focuses on recommendations for the use of generative AI in student work, including text, code, and other artifacts, and provides advice on how instructors can guide their students in this endeavor.

Generative AI is an emerging technology that can improve productivity. However, its impact on the learning process is not yet well understood. Depending on the learning objectives, the use of generative AI can be counterproductive or useful to achieve these goals. This guide is accordingly derived from the learning objectives of the different courses and the competencies to be acquired by the students.

We believe that critical reflection is crucial for the effective and responsible use of generative AI in teaching and learning activities. Therefore, all activities that enable students to use generative AI should stimulate reflection on challenges and opportunities in a given scenario and encourage students to critically evaluate the impact of their use of AI.

In any case, students remain responsible for their work. This also applies to the parts of their work that have been created using or influenced by AI. This means that students are expected to critically evaluate contributions from AI, to be able to fully explain such elements in their code or written text, and to acknowledge and be transparent about which parts of their work have been generated or influenced by AI.
