De-registration or Exmatriculation (In German Exmatrikulation)
De-registration
In the case of de-registration at KIT, there is to be distinguished between a proper de-registration and a de-registration ex officio.
Proper de-registration
The procedure for proper de-registration can be found on Business unit Studium und Lehre website. Proper de-registration can be requested here.
De-registration from the university takes effect on March 31 or September 30, and exams may be taken until that date. However, the notification letter is sent as early as mid-February or mid-August via the notification inbox in the CAMPUS system (campus.studium.kit.edu).
There may be various reasons for de-registration. If the reason is reaching the maximum duration of study, the following applies:
- Bachelor’s students in their 3rd semester may technically re-register for the 4th semester in CAS-Campus. However, eligibility to take exams in the 4th semester is only granted if the orientation exams have been passed or if the Examination Board has approved an extension of the deadline for taking the orientation exams.
- Bachelor’s students in their 9th semester can technically re-register for the 10th semester in CAS-Campus. However, eligibility to take exams in the 10th semester is only granted with approval of an extension of the study period by the Examination Board.
- Master’s students in their 7th semester can technically re-register for the 8th semester in CAS-Campus. However, eligibility to take exams in the 8th semester is only granted with approval of an extension of the study period by the Examination Board.
Students who have submitted an application for an extension of the study period or an extension of the deadline for taking the OR, on which the Examination Board has not yet decided, may re-enroll with the approval even after the re-enrollment deadline has passed or at the beginning of the following semester.
Advance payment of semester fees must be made directly to the office responsible for re-enrollment.
If de-registration occurs automatically due to failure to re-enroll at KIT (e.g., upon completion of studies), additional guidelines must be followed. In addition to this de-registration, a proper de-registration must take place (see above), as otherwise the issuance of graduation documents cannot be completed. Upon completion of studies, re-registration is no longer necessary if the remaining required coursework is completed within the examination period. This is independent of when the grades for this coursework are received by Student Services.”
