Students can apply for a semester of leave during their studies. If the reason for the leave of absence is an internship, a signature from the KIT Department of Informatics is required. Even after switching to online applications for a semester of leave, the stamp from the Internship Office and the internship contract must still be submitted. The relevant form can be found in the student portal as a PDF file once you have selected “Internship” as the reason for your leave of absence application. You can send this completed form and proof that you have been accepted for an internship as a PDF to the Informatics Study Program Services (ISS) from your KIT email address. Once you have received approval from the faculty, send it to SLE immediately. 

As soon as you have received the approval from the faculty, send it immediately to the SLE (see address in the application form).

Bachelor's, Master's or other final theses as well as exams that are taken during the semester and which, due to their nature and duration, require the repeated use of resources (such as KIT facilities or supervision services) are not exams that may be taken during a leave of absence. This regulation still does not apply to those students who, during a leave of absence, take maternity protection periods as defined in the Maternity Protection Act (MuSchG) as amended and parental leave in accordance with the Federal Parental Allowance and Parental Leave Act (BEEG) or care for a close relative who is in need of care. Special rights and obligations apply to these students during a leave of absence; they may also complete coursework and take exams without restriction during their leave of absence.

Leave of absence due to parental leave when a thesis has been started: If a leave of absence has been granted due to parental leave and a thesis is to be returned for this reason, the leave of absence granted by Student Services is not sufficient. In accordance with Section 3 (2) of the statutes on regulations to compensate for disadvantages(https://www.sle.kit.edu/downloads/AmtlicheBekanntmachungen/2022_AB_013.pdf), the responsible examination board must be informed in writing of the period of parental leave to be taken at least four weeks before the date from which the parental leave is to commence. The necessary supporting documents must be enclosed.

Since the summer semester 2015, it is still possible to take exams at KIT during a semester of leave. Please note the difference between exams and coursework.
