Final theses
Prerequisites
Informatics
Bachelor's degree in Informatics: The student should have successfully completed module examinations of 120 CP. All mandatory modules with the exception of one mandatory module (in accordance with § 20 Para. 2 Clauses 1 - 4 of the SPO) are passed.
Master's degree in Informatics: Students must have already completed 60 CP during their studies, of which at least 15 CP must be in one of the chosen the specialization areas.
Information Systems
Bachelor's degree in Information Systems: The student should have successfully completed module examinations of 120 CP and have passed all modules in Mathematics, Information Systems and the Seminar in accordance with Section 20 (2) (1), (3) and (6) of the SPO.
Bachelor of Education in Informatics
Please refer to the German version of the FAQ, since these study lines are only offered in German.
Credit points
Number of credit points for final thesis
Informatics B.Sc. SPO 2015 and 2022: 15 LP
Informatics M.Sc. SPO 2015 and 2023: 30 CP
Information Systems B.Sc.: 15 CP
Informatics B.Ed. (Bachelor of Education), Informatics M.Ed (Master of Education), Informatics M.Ed. EF (Master of Education Extension Subject):Please refer to the German version of the FAQ, since these study lines are only offered in German.
General conditions
Thesis processing time and extension
B.Sc. Informatics and Information Systems: 4 months processing time with the option to extend by 1 month
B.Ed. Informatics M.Ed. and M.Ed. Erweiterungsfach Informatics: Please refer to the German version of the FAQ, since these study lines are only offered in German.
M.Sc. Informatics and Computer Science: 6 months processing time with possibility of extension by 3 months
Students may apply for an extension of the processing time of their final thesis, if they have valid reasons for which they are not responsible (e.g. illness).
The application must be submitted to the Examination Board via ISS. It must reach ISS at least two weeks before the deadline. The downloadable application for extension must be used. This must be signed by the student and the examiner. Furthermore, a justification and, if necessary, proof (e.g. medical certificate) must be attached.
Language
Change of title
A change of title is possible at any time before submission. It must be communicated to the secretary's office of the responsible examiner. The title change is recorded directly in the system by the examiner's secretary office.
Submission
Students must submit their thesis in paper or digital to the examiner. The submission date is entered into the system by the examiner's secretary office.
Students must confirm in writing that they have written the thesis on their own, have not used any sources or aids other than those specified, have marked the cited passages or content as such, have read the KIT statutes on safeguarding good scientific practice and have met with the GI guidelines in the currently valid version.
Presentation
The presentation is part of the thesis module. It can also be given before submission, but no later than four weeks after submission of the thesis. If the presentation is the last achievement in the degree program, the date of the presentation is the graduation date. If the submission falls at the end of a semester and the presentation only takes place after submission at the beginning of the new semester, it is necessary to re-register for the following semester
Exception: Informatics teaching degree program: Please refer to the German version of the FAQ, since these study lines are only offered in German.
Termination of the thesis
B.Sc. Computer Science; B.Sc. Business Informatics; M.Sc. Computer Science;
Students may abort the final thesis without consequences only once and within the first month of the processing period. The termination of the thesis remains documented in the system.
B.Ed. Computer Science; M.Ed. Computer Science:
Please refer to the German version of the FAQ, since these study lines are only offered in German.
Parental leave
Please note special regulations when taking parental leave after starting a thesis.
Information on the Master's thesis in Information Systems can be found on the website of the KIT Faculty of Business Administration and Economics.
Registration and administrative procedure
Process steps in detail for all programs:
- The examiner's office creates an instance of the thesis in the CMS system and assigns it to the student.
- The student registers for the thesis via the student portal.
- The examiner' s office enters the registration date of the thesis. The system automatically calculates the submission deadline from the assignment date. The examiner then publishes the system entry. Only then can ISS check the information and approve the thesis (on behalf of the examination board).
- The examination board approves the thesis (this step is omitted for theses in Information Systems).
- The student works on the thesis and submits it to the examiner.
- The examiner's office confirms the submission in the system and records the submission date.
- The secretary's office of the examiner enters the grade of the thesis and provisionally publishes it. The examination date is the date of submission or the date of the presentation, whichever is later. Exception: In the teaching degree program, the submission date is always the examination date. The document containing the review of the thesis for students in the Informatics and Informatics Teacher Training study programs is forwarded to the examination board.
- ISS checks the information and publishes the grade on behalf of the examination board.
Informatics B.Sc. and M.Sc. / Information Systems B.Sc. / Computer Science M.Sc.
No extra steps are necessary for an internal thesis.
Informatics B.Ed., M.Ed. M.Ed. Erweiterungsfach:
Please refer to the German version of the FAQ, since these study lines are only offered in German.
External thesis
External thesis
An internal thesis is a thesis that is written in one of the research groups of the KIT Department of Informatics. For students of Information Systems B.Sc, the Bachelor's theses at the KIT Department of Informatics and the KIT Department of Economics and Management are considered as internal final theses. Students can also write their thesis externally, i.e. at another faculty or in a company.
External theses must be approved by the examination board. Information can be found here:
