Medical certificate

Students must submit a medical certificate to prove that they are unable to take an exam. Please note the following:

Deadline

The inability to take an exam must be reported in person or in writing as soon as reasonably possible after it occurs. The examiner or if no other possible, his or her office must be informed. A medical examination to clarify the state of health must be carried out on the day of the exam. This means the student has to seek a medical facility on the same day. The medical certificate must be submitted to the examiner or his or her office immediately. The examiner acts on behalf the examination board and may decide, if the medical certificate is detailed enough and may excuse the student from the exam.
Medical certificates must always be submitted to the office that is directly affected by the student's inability to take the exam.

  • In the case of exams, the medical certificate must be submitted to the examiner or his office (as described above).
  • In the case of an interruption of the study program due to illness or an application for an extension of the study period, the medical certificate must be submitted to the examination board.
  • In the case of a leave of absence due to illness, the medical certificate must be submitted to the Service Unit for Studies and Teaching (SLE)

Form and content of the medical certificate

A medical certificate must contain the information that enables the examiner/examination board to determine, if the impairment also extends to the inability to take the exam. An inability or impairment to take an exam as determined by a doctor does not necessarily have to be accepted by the examiner or the examination board.
The medical certificate may but must not necessarily contain a diagnostic, unless this alone indicates an inability to take an exam (“feverish cold”). It should include not only the symptoms but also the effects on the student's performance. It is also necessary to state the duration of the illness - beginning, (expected) end - and the date of the doctor's visit.
