LP-Verschnitt / Notenberechnung

Credit point (CP) blend

It is possible that the number of credit points (CP) achieved through passing all necessary exams in a module higher is, than the number of credit points provided by the module (CP excess). In this case the credit points in excess will be discarded. Only the number of CP specified in the module handbook for the module will be credited.

The excess of Credit Points will be treated the same at all levels (e.g. Minor Subject). Also for the study program only 120 CP will be credited.

Grade calculation

On all levels (e.g. areas of specialization, Minor Subject etc.) grades are weighted according to the CP achieved. The overall final grades for the degree programs are also weighted grades.

The Bachelor's degree program has 180 CP, the Master's degree program has 120 CP. As stated above, it may happen that you earn more credit points during your studies than can be credited. This may happen at both module and area level. Example:

                                               Module level
Module Module CP Module Grade Exam Exam CP Exam Grade
Module A 10 CP [(6 * 1,7) + (5 * 2,7)] / 11 = 2,1 Exam A 6 CP 1,7
Exam B 5 CP 2,7
                                              Subject level
Subject Subject CP Subject Grade Module Module CP Module Grade
Elective area 29 CP [(15 * 2,3) + (17 * 3,3)] / 32 = 2,8 Module A 15 CP 2,3
Module B 17 CP 3,3

The grade is calculated on the basis of the CPs earned. However, the CPs in excess are discarded afterwards. Only the number of CPs provided in the module handbook for the respective module or area are credited. Example: For the Minor Subject at a Master level, a maximum of 18  CPs are credited, even if you have taken modules adding up to 20 CP.
Please note that some areas in the degree program have a high limit of credit points (e.g. Areas of Specialization at Master level).

In this cases, the maximum of credit points for the degree program (180 CP Bachelor / 120 CP Master) may be exceeded with one module only. Example: If you credited modules adding up to 119 CPs, you may take one further module having 5 CP, but not two modules with 2 CP and 3 CP respectively.

Students must check for themselves before completing their studies whether the requirements for the degree are are all met and, if necessary, apply for a reeboking of modules.

When calculating the weighted averages of the module grades, the subject grades and the overall grade, only the first decimal place after the decimal point is taken into account; all other decimals are discarded without rounding.

The computation of the module, area grades and the overall grade is regulated in the relevant section of the study and examination regulations on "Passing the Bachelor's or Master's examination, formation of the overall grade". Interdisciplinary qualifications are not graded and therefore are not included in the calculation of the overall grade. For example, at a Master level the overall grade is computed regarding the area grades and the final thesis grade weighted according to the CPs and divided by 114, since 6 CP of interdisciplinary qualifications are not graded.

Non-emphasized achievements are not taken into account at subject level but are included in the overall grade.

When computing the grades of a module or an area (e.g. Minor Subject, Elective Studies) not graded exams or modules are not taking into account. The module or area grade is computed based only on the weighed grades of graded exams or modules. When computing the overall grade, the grades of the areas are weighed with the full amount of credit points, regardless of all modules of theses are were graded or not.
