Recognition of exams

Students may apply for the recognition of partial achievements and / or modules, if the corresponding exams have been successfully passed outside the current program of study. This may be:

  1. From a previous study program on the same level (bachelor or master) at KIT or another university
  2. From an exchange program
  3. From other institutions, not necessary universities.

Students may apply for the recognition, if

  • The exam is not part of a successfully obtained degree on the same level
  • The exam has the necessary level of the study program (e.g. bachelor or master level)

Recognitions from another study program at KIT:

Recognitions from another study program at KIT for modules / partial achievements with identical identifiers can be applied for by e-mail (KIT account). The modules / partial achievements must still be part of the current program of study of the student. A transcript of records from the previous study program must be attached as a PDF. The modules / partial achievements to be recognized must be clearly stated in the e-mail or marked on the transcript of records. Send this e-mail to: beratung-informatik∂informatik.kit.edu

If modules / partial achievements with different identifiers from the previous study program at KIT are to be recognized, an application must be submitted using the downloadable form (according to the procedure for external recognitions).

Recognition for Informatics and Computer Science MSc.: If you apply for recognition in these master programs, please also indicate in which area (e.g. area of specialization, elective area, minor studies) the respective module / partial achievement is to be booked into.

External recognitions:

Modules / partial achievements completed in a previous study program outside KIT or during a semester abroad can be recognized, provided that a competence-oriented equivalence is established. Exams outside the university system (achievements that have been proven at institutions with a standardized quality assurance system) can also be recognized, provided that a competence-oriented equivalence to a module or a partial achievement of the present study program is established. The qualification objectives are the basis for the recognition. The external qualifications are compared to the qualification of the modules of the respective study program. They have to mostly overlap, not to be equivalent. In case the description of the external exam is not comprehensive enough,  content-related criteria can be taken into consideration (scope and depth of the content).
Several external exams can be recognized as one single module / partial achievement.
If a module at KIT has several partial achievements, students must apply for the recognition of each partial achievement. Applications for recognitions from a previous study program must be submitted in the first semester after enrolment.

Procedure

  1. identification of a possible equivalent module / partial achievement in the current study program according to the module handbook.
  2. fill in the application for recognition (see below).
  3. contact the responsible examiner (usually the module coordinator) with the application and a transcript of records (including passed, failed exams and every other type of exam). Further documentation of the content of the course taken (such as lecture and exam documents) are helpful and should be, if possible, submitted.
  4. the application for recognition (including the statement of the responsible examiner) and a copy of the transcript of records will be sent to the ISS by the examiner or his / her office.
  5. The final decision on the recognition is made by the examination board.

Application for recognition of an exam achievement for all degree programs of the faculty

Please note: A subsequent rebooking of recognized additional achievements with “original title” into the elective area of the regular curriculum is excluded.

Further informations for recognitions from an exchange program
When planning a semester abroad, it is advisable to record the planned exams in an exam plan agreement for recognition before departure. The form is not binding, but is intended to help students plan their studies abroad.

Exam plan agreement for the recognition of exams

If there is no equivalent module at KIT, the external exam can be recognized with an individual title. This is rare the case. External exams must match the level and the qualification objectives of the current study program. This also requires the statement of an examiner in the respective field of study. The original title is noted on the application for recognition. All recognitions will be credited with whole credit points (no credits with decimal places, e.g. x.5).

One a recognition has been approved, ISS will record the module / partial achievement in the individual study plan of the student. ISS is the main contact during the recognition process.
