Parallel study

Students can be enrolled in more than one degree program at the same time (parallel studies). It is recommended that you only apply for admission to a second degree program once you have successfully completed at least 2-3 semesters and the orientation examination (at Bachelor level) in the first degree program. Parallel studies are limited exclusively to the KIT degree programs. The relevant KIT requirements must be observed. At a Master level you should complete at least one or two semesters before applying for a second degree.

In order to take up parallel studies, students must regularly apply for the 1st semester of the second degree program. A letter of recommendation from the faculty is only required for degree programs with admission restrictions.

In order to receive the recommendation letter, students must submit a statement to the ISS (as a PDF, via email) in which they explain why parallel studies are important for their further professional development. The statement will be reviewed and the approval will be granted and noted directly on it. The statement with the approval can then be used in the application process.

Parallel studies in Informatics - Information Systems are not permitted; these degree programs can only be completed one after the other.

Exam registration and credit transfer for courses offered in both degree programs

Exams and modules offered in both degree programs, must only be taken once and transferred to the other degree program. For the transfer, students should select the modules in the other degree program and provide via email ISS with a transcript of records of the passed exams and modules. The modules to be transferred should be listed in the email. The ISS will book this credit accordingly in the Informatics or Computer Science degree program.
If the module has an equivalent in the Informatics and Computer Science degree program, but does not have an identical module identifier/partial achievement in both degree programs, an application for recognition must be submitted (see link to FAQ entry on recognition)

Final theses: In order to write only one thesis, students must apply for two supervisors, one in each of the respective degree programs in good time. The thesis is only registered in the degree program in which it is mainly completed. If the thesis is registered in Informatics or Computer Science, the regulations for theses here apply. If the thesis is registered in the parallel degree program, a survey must be drawn up at the end and signed by both examiners.
